Dr Louis Awerbuck

Clinical Psychologist

Dr Louis Awerbuck has been in private practice as a clinical psychologist since 1995. His career started in the SA Police Service, where he initiated a unit for Crime-Centred Psychology. During this time, he did his postgraduate research on the profiling of serial murderers and rapists.

He completed an honours degree at the University of the Free State, as well as a Higher Diploma in Education. During this time he also registered with the Health Professions Council as a psychometrist. Thereafter he completed a master’s degree in Clinical Psychology at the University of Johannesburg where he qualified cum laude. As part of further postgraduate studies, he later studied industrial psychology at the North-West University, as well as sport psychology at Stellenbosch University. Louis obtained a PhD in Europe, through research in the field of forensic psychology.

Louis has been involved with the training of post-graduate students in psychology. He is also a registered practitioner in Neuro-Linguistic Programming. Louis is registrered as medico-legal practitioner with the South African Medico-legal Association. He regularly publishes psychoeducational articles on human behaviour in print and social media. Louis is also the co-author of Wie is ek? (Naledi), Ek & Jy – Verhoudings wat werk (NB Publishers) and also co-wrote Anderkant uit – stories oor trauma & hoop (Tafelberg) with Hanlie Retief. He regularly contributes to Vrye Weekblad, writing about themes related to mental health. Louis is co-presenter of the podcast series “In Gesprek met Louis & Heinz” (www.ingesprek.co.za).

He has been specialising for more than 25 years in psychotherapy with adults and couples, as well as in psychological assessments, medico-legal testimonies and sport psychology. He acts regularly as expert witness in legal cases, and has testified numerous times in the Magistrate’s Court, District Court, as well as the High Court of South Africa. He has also provided testimony at the Supreme Court of Appeal. In the field of sport psychology Louis was involved with the Blue Bulls rugby union, the Netherlands national rugby union, St Alban’s College, Hoërskool Waterkloof and Paarl Boys’ High School. He also worked with several individual athletes on a provincial, national, and Olympic level, with the aim of improving their performance.

Louis sometimes acts as a consultant for corporate companies regarding leadership development, change management and interpersonal skills training. Some of his past clients include Anglo American, De Beers, Deloitte & Touche, PPC, SA Breweries, SAP Southern Africa, ABSA, Standard Bank, SA Reserve Bank, Fedsure, Nedcor, BKB and First National Bank.

Louis is a director of the SA Centre for Mental Health. Apart from practising clinical psychology, he provides psychoeducation through the centre to the general public via several national media platforms.
